Old keys stop working; the locks stay on the doors.
A top key for the owner, narrower keys for staff, cleaners or tenants.
Push-to-exit devices on rear and fire doors that still latch properly.
Narrow aluminium-frame doors wear out cylinders and latches fast.
Lost cabinet keys, new cylinders, or a locked drawer opened.
Yard gates, roll-down grilles and padlocked storage.

West Oakland and the Jingletown waterfront have plenty of converted industrial buildings: steel man-doors, sliding gates, padlocked yards. They take heavier hardware than a house, and the locks often sit on doors that have been repainted for decades.
If your building has several tenants, find out who owns the exterior locks before you book. Usually it's the landlord. Unit doors are often yours.
